Venison for Dinner
Приєднався 29 тра 2013
Thank you for joining us on this crazy journey! Our family- Kate and Marius plus our five kids, have always enjoyed living a homemade life whenever possible. Moving 1000miles north in 2017 to Northern BC, Canada upped our game even more. We live on a 34 acre homestead and get a kick out of things like raising our own meat, dairy and vegetables. Theres plenty of failures, you’ll be sure to see those here too. We’re a homeschooling family who believes life is the best teacher but we do hit the books in winter. I’m so glad you’re here, I hope you stick around!

My Favourite Ways to Use Canned Potatoes
Переглядів 11 тис.3 місяці тому
Here's my actual mashed potato bread recipe- as you can see I didnt quite follow it...I just wing it! If you're swapping for canned potatoes, they are softer/runnier than regular mashed potatoes, so i lower the amount of milk added. I made about a double batch in the video. Try to make the dough on the sticky side…this will make them fluffy as possible! I know I’ve got it right when to shape th...

We're BACK In the CHEESEMAKING Game!
I have missed you, your humour and sharing a part of your life. But I totally understand. Hope you are doing well. 🌷🇨🇦
Kate, I'm a little bit confused.. I am new at this.. you said reduce the milk by 1/4 cup for each egg added? I thought I saw you add all the milk and then add your eggs? Did you just add a little more flour? Thanks
Recipes: just a suggestion….
My ma used to do this with me, too, when I was little! I loved it… I had storebought stuff, too, but the homemade stuff was my favorite.
I have been missing your videos hope every thing is ok
Alright! Subbed for the messy cooking! Keep it real!
New sub from Tennessee! True Grit Appalachia recommended you!
You’re doing it the right way as far as I’m concerned, you can still use a stool, But as long as you’re close and comfortable that’s all that’s necessary. Your milking technique is correct, much better than a lot I have seen on here, believe me I have never seen people pull a nipple clean to the ground like I have on here. Especially with those Third World countries, it’s almost like they’re tearing the bag off of the cow! Makes me so mad the way they abuse the animals
Hi Kate! I hope you're doing well. My daughter is grown however I know some young ones who will love this! Thank you!
It's a beautiful thing to watch little Freya milk her goats. Great job mom
My kids love when I put an essential oil in it for it to smell nice! We usually divide the dough and make multiple colours but we only had green today! . If you want to make heres what i do- i suggest making a recipe worth for every 1-2 kids. I did x3 . 1 cup all purpose flour 1/4 c salt 2 tbsp cream of tartar or citric acid (preservative!) 1 c water 1-3 tbsp oil (i use 3 because salt is drying to the skin and i use tallow and it moisturizes their hands) . To make- mix dry in a heavy bottom pot. Add water and oil, mix and turn heat to medium. Stir pretty regularly, scraping the bottom. As it heats it will thicken and become a ball. Once its all same colour dump it on the counter (its greasy+food dye so use a cookie sheet if your counter is precious). When you can handle it, gently knead in 10-20 drops food dye and 3-5 drops essential oil that smells nice! You can divide into a few balls and make multiple colours too! . Store in a container in the fridge for best shelf life! . Tag me if you make it! It takes me about 10 min to have hours of happiness from the littles. Warm playdoh is out of this world sensory delicious
So glad to hear and see you! Best blessings to you and yours.
When is raw milk good to drink boiled or unboiled
As long as you know your source practices good sterilization, it's fine to drink the raw milk unboiled (not pasteurized). There is, however, a lot of debate about this topic.
Mine completely separated. Liquid on the top that is yellow and then the bottom is dark creamy. What did I do wrong?
The screaming kids were quite annoying in your video.
I am getting ready to can peaches and pears later in the summer. Pop open a jar and winter and the summer floods back to you.
Looks good! How does your Dutch oven get so brown inside?
I would say it's because I brown a lot of meat and spices in it and I'm not about to scrub the enamel off when the stain is simply a stain. It's clean, just not as pretty as when I bought it.
What a cutie helping you! Big smile for the camera…………. Precious.
Yummy!
New subscriber from California. That looks so beautiful.
Thanks for subbing!
How do you take care of your animals without lights in the barn? Huh Never seen that before, you can't see it either
Sorry we were trying to keep low light, but our eyes do adjust to the darkness as we don't have any streetlight/city lights around us.
Let mommy lick her own calf for bonding and love, or you can lick its butt too. Please video this all women ranchers do it so don't be embarrased, it's normal
Came over from Ruthanne Zimmermanns page, love your recipe and approach to cooking and baking!
Thanks so much! 😊
I saw a german video where they used raw milk to make clabber and then let it set more and strained it and it made quark that way. Apparently it's the traditional way. I tried it and it indeed tastes like the quark I buy at the supermarket here in Germany.
Yes, I use clabber now too! It's awesome!
I came across your channel because I found your sourdough master recipe and love it. Cheesemaking is next! Thank you!
Awesome! Thank you!
Here from True Grit Appalacian Ways!! So thankful to find your channel too ❤

Oh my gosh. This was so cute to watch. I think it would be a real treat to taste your party creations. Thanks for posting this. I was looking for recipes of favorite treat foods that are cooked without synthetic additives like colors, inflammatory oils, etc, etc. Thanks again.
You are so welcome! I have lots of treat foods made with real ingredients on my blog.
Good job little girl! GREAT JOB MOM! Raising self sufficient beautiful children. 😇
Thank you so much for your kind words!
What are the measurements?
Just do a one to one ratio to start. You can tweak to your taste preference.
Thank you for showing the whole process... there we so many that just showed how to put the casi g on the stuffer and nothing else! Bravo great job!❤
I so glad it was helpful!
Sad to see all the snagging.. Cast and ripping the line is pretty unethical.. They should be shown better..
They eat them so there nothing sad about it
@@mikewilliams2518 Snagging is Illegal as fk in BC . Do you think poaching should be legal?
But I’m not sure snagging is legal in bc
@@mikewilliams2518 No, it is not legal at all. My guess is that if a conservation officer even watched this vid, tickets would be written..
@@marcThespazz good to know man! I’m from Alberta I’m going for my first time this summer never caught a salmon before.
Well to me they don't both look alike. One of them is seriously burnt! You'd have to scrape that off .. carcinogenic stuff. Don't wanna eat burnt food.
Cool recipe and cute kids 👍🏻
Thank you for this video. It really helps me. I’ve had starter for 12 months now, but I feel like I’m starting to finally learn~ again thank you.
You're so welcome! I'm sure you will get back into the swing of it!
14:37 loaf shaping after bench rest starts
I usually let it bench rest 10 minutes.
Love pancakes and peaches 🍑 . I love the prayer song!
I watched your video after Ruth Ann Zimmerman said you made the best sourdough starter. I have had sourdough bread that I really didn't care for and since Ruth Ann said yours was the best I thought I would check it out. However, I need to know how to start the starter. Were you given the starter or did you make your own and if so, where do I go for instructions. Thanks!
There are a lot of recipes online but the basic premise of starting with good fresh flour and water is standard. The main thing to remember is its going to take at least four days and you want to keep it on the counter in a warmish spot, covered with a piece of cotton or a lid sitting on top but not screwed down. Start with about 2 tablespoons flour and a bit less than that of water. Each day (approx 24 hours) you are going to stir in down and add flour equal to the amount of "starter" in your jar and a bit less than that of water. It should be a muffin batter consistency. You are aiming for seeing bubbles and your starter doubling. When you get more than 1/2 cup of "starter" you are best to discard extra so you are only "feeding up" a small amount. Once your "starter" doubles within 24 hours it is good to go.
Thank you so much!
Can I use vitamin e oil?
I've not use vitamin E oil before. If you try it let me know how it works.
Thank you for making these restocking videos. They remind me to check the expiration dates on my first aid kit supplies.
Glad it was helpful!
Love your channel and your farm life. I’m from Bronx New York so it’s nice to fantasize about being out in the country with a different life. Side bar, nice husband but he gives me chop someone up and dump the parts around the US vibes.
Thanks I think. Most people up here are similar to my husband so you are definitely from the city. Thanks for joining us here.

Very helpful, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Youve raised some hard working, capable kids! Good job Kate & Marius 👏
Thank you!! 😊
Thank you for this information. Have a blessed day.
You are so welcome
Its quite simple- how often does your family actually eat what you’re canning? How often do you want to be eating it? . Theres a few weeks a year where you will be eating it fresh, otherwise…if you want to eat canned peaches once a week- can 50 jars that are the right size for your family . Canned salmon 2 times a month? Well, 1 doz months in a year, so 2 doz jars . There is some nuance- maybe you would eat more if you had more. Maybe youre an every other year canner (yep! Canning is good more than a year…) so you can double of something this year cause it was plentiful and dont next year . And maybe you canned 50 pints of jam but come spring you realize you only ate 30…can less next season or figure out how to use more (@foodinjars has a book all about using your canned goods in unusual ways!) . You can apply this to freezing your harvest (we eat frozen veg 6-8m a year, so i figure out how much broccoli we will realistically eat in that) buying dried foods (50lb bag of rice is 50 meals for us, so at once a week we will eat in a year) and all your preservation!
Love your channel. Haven’t heard that prayer sing in many a yr! Megan at true grit mentioned y’all so thought I’d give you a look!! God bless
Awesome! Thank you for joining us here.
This was great! Ty Kate.
Love it! 😂
